5 Digital Menu Board Ideas That Increase Sales in Cafes and Restaurants

Getting a digital menu board is the easy part. Most businesses hang a screen behind the counter, put their menu on it, and consider the job done. That works, but it leaves most of the value on the table.

Digital menu boards are not just a prettier version of a chalkboard. When used properly, they actively influence what customers order and how much they spend. Here are five ideas that make a real difference.

1 Highlight your highest-margin items

Every menu has items that cost less to make but carry a better margin, a specialty coffee, a meal deal, a seasonal special. On a printed menu, everything looks equal. On a digital board, you control the hierarchy.

Use larger text, a different colour, or a dedicated panel to give those items visual prominence. Customers tend to order what they notice first. If your flat white upgrade or your combo deal is the first thing they see, more of them will choose it.

What to do: Identify your two or three highest-margin products and give them their own dedicated panel or visual treatment on the board.

2 Switch content by time of day

Most cafes serve different things at different times, breakfast until 11, lunch after that, maybe a pre-theatre menu or happy hour in the evening. With a static menu, you either show everything all day or you manually swap boards.

Digital boards can switch automatically. Show your breakfast menu and morning specials until midday, then transition to lunch offers without anyone touching anything. Customers only see what's relevant to the time they're ordering, which makes decisions easier and reduces confusion.

What to do: Map out your trading day into 2–3 blocks and create a separate screen layout for each. Set them to switch automatically.

3 Use a "today's special" panel

A rotating special creates urgency. When customers see something framed as today only or limited availability, they are more likely to try it. It also gives you a natural reason to change your board regularly, which keeps repeat customers engaged.

This does not need to be a different dish every single day. Even rotating between three or four specials on a weekly cycle is enough to create the impression of freshness and variety.

What to do: Dedicate one panel of your board to a rotating special. Update it weekly via WhatsApp if you use a managed service like ScreenFizz.

4 Show your allergen and dietary information clearly

This one is less about upselling and more about removing hesitation. Customers with dietary requirements, vegan, gluten-free, nut allergies, often spend longer deciding or ask staff repeatedly. If they can see the information clearly on the board, ordering becomes faster and they feel more confident.

Faster ordering means shorter queues. Confident customers come back. Both are good for your business.

What to do: Add small icons or labels (V, VG, GF) next to relevant items on your digital board. Keep it consistent and easy to scan.

5 Promote your loyalty scheme or social media

Your menu board is one of the few moments you have a customer's undivided attention, they are standing in your queue with nothing to do but look at your screen. Use a small section of it to prompt them to follow you on Instagram, sign up to your loyalty card, or leave a Google review.

A simple line like "Follow us @yourcafe for weekly specials" costs nothing to add and can steadily grow your audience over months.

What to do: Add a branded footer or side panel to your board with your social handle or loyalty scheme QR code.

The most important thing

None of these ideas require expensive software or a designer on call. They require a digital board that is easy to update and a plan for what you want it to communicate. Start with one or two changes and see what difference they make before adding more.

If you are still using a static image or a PDF on your screen, that is the first thing to fix. A properly managed digital menu board, one that you can update in minutes, is what makes everything else possible.
